What is prenatal massage?
A specialized massage designed to treat the common discomforts of pregnancy.
Is it safe to get a massage while I am pregnant or postpartum?
Yes! Massage during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum has been used throughout history to maintain optimal maternal and fetal health, prepare women for labor, and help with a quick recovery. Massage is safe in any trimester for healthy pregnancies when correct positioning and technique is used.
What are the benefits of prenatal massage?
Some benefits of prenatal massage include:
- Reduction of muscle tension, pain, stress, and anxiety.
- Brings nutrients to tissues and eliminates waste products which reduces swelling, eases varicose veins, and normalizes blood.
- Supports a healthy utero environment which improves fetal development.
- Treats the common discomforts of pregnancy.
- Elevates the mood and promotes general well-being.
- Prepares the expecting mother physically, emotionally, and mentally for labor.
Can I lay on my stomach while I am pregnant?
During the 1st trimester laying on your stomach and back should be safe for you and your baby. Once you are further along in your pregnancy the side laying position is the safest way to receive a massage for both you and your baby. Even with a special table or pillow, laying facedown puts stress on the uterine ligaments and can contribute to lower back pain. These tables and pillows are only meant for brief treatments such as a chiropractor adjustment or a massage lasting less than 15 minutes.
Can you still do a full body massage if I am laying on my side?
Yes! We can massage your neck, back, arms, hands, feet, legs, and hips in this position. Upon request we may also massage your abdomen, face, and scalp. Your therapist may also have you lay on your back in a semi incline position for a short period to work on your face and scalp more.
How often should I get massages during my pregnancy?
At least twice a month is generally recommended for all trimesters. When you come in for your first treatment your therapist will be able to customize your treatment plan and describe the appropriate frequency. When you get closer to your due date, coming in for a weekly massage will help prepare you and baby for labor.
